What happened to this poor tree? What is the story? I noticed it right away – close to the edge of my walking path last month. Since all the trees had dropped their leaves, this one’s wounds were clearly visible. No longer hidden from view. Layers of bark stripped away.
I suspect it just happened to be in the way of a town or utility company brush clearing project. Left damaged and forgotten. A sad sight.

Oh I hadn’t thought about deer! Do you think they were eating bark? Yes, I have seen a few deer every so often. I felt so bad for this tree. I didn’t notice any others farther away from the path.

Sometimes they eat it, and sometimes it is from rubbing up against it. I wanted to add I love how you captured the details of the bark!

Thank you. The silver lining was the revealed details. If the damage was from deer, then I guess it’s nature on nature, rather than humans causing harm. Makes me a feel a bit less sad about it.

It does look cut, but sgeoil is probably right. A buck in rut will scrape the heck out of trees.

Well, that is a mystery. Next time I’m out there I’ll see if there are any other trees that look like that. Meanwhile, I’ve learned something new today!
