Who knew back in December that this view from Row 14 would soon become a distant memory? Not me. I had expected to be back in “my” seat again long before now.

The friendly skies, however, are no longer quite so friendly.

It was a hot day last September when I parked the car in the state beach lot – looking forward to a nice long walk along the sand. I stopped for a moment next to the restrooms and glanced toward the beach.

Except where was the beach exactly? At first glance, I was reminded of Maria at the opening of “The Sound of Music.” The hills are alive and all that.

Thankfully, in my case, these hills weren’t those kind of hills…but alive all the same, as they were roped off to protect the endangered Piping Plover population.

Fortunately, a sandy walking path – a short walk to the ocean – was just around the corner.

I spied with my little eye…

I almost missed witnessing a clandestine dewdrop convention during a walk last week. Fortunately a glint of sun caught my eye…stopping me in my tracks.

What is that?

I carefully trespassed a few yards onto an expanse of lawn to investigate. Nobody was out and about…so I was safe to proceed.

First look:

How the heck were those drops hanging there? No signs of a cobweb that I could see.

Gotta get closer.

Second look:

Maybe…it really was magic.

Third look:

Yup. Magic. That explains it.

Nice blouse!

Thanks, but…um…no this isn’t a blouse…

Nice shirt?…

Well, not really…

Then…what?

It’s a TOP.

So how do you adequately explain what isn’t a blouse or a shirt exactly? I never could figure that out.

Perhaps it’s a gender thing. Not something I ever prefer to default to. However…

Defining a top is harder than you think. Especially to a guy whose wardrobe basically consists of: button down shirts that go with a tie, mock turtlenecks and short sleeve T-shirts. Technically, not a top to be found.

Whereas, I have plenty of examples….so fortunately explanations are no longer necessary. 🙂

A chilly day at the beach a month ago…which now feels like many months ago.

A seagull surveyed the beach from the top of a light pole. Most likely looking forward to the return of warm weather visitors. Tourists settled in canvas chairs. Books open. Umbrellas up. Sand castles under construction. Spreading their beach towels on the sand…along with an endless supply of sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

This seagull and its buddies are going to be waiting longer than usual for their pick of the leftovers this season.
