Does anyone remember those Mop Tops?
The four young men who burst upon the music scene in the 1960s with Long Hair! (Scandalous!) Their nickname – the term for a “bowl” haircut – made this hairstyle a popular choice from then on. Much to the dismay of parents everywhere. Mine included.
I was a very excited 9 year old when The Beatles released Meet The Beatles. It was the first record I ever owned (and, yes, I still have it).
But I was even more excited to receive my very own “Beatle Doll.”
I still have that too, along with one of his bandmates – Ringo – tucked into a box labeled “Memorabilia” along with a stack of tattered black & white Beatles cards and a poster.

The surviving Beatles: Ringo and Paul
Yvonne, a family friend from Switzerland, gave me the Paul doll…as he was considered the cutest and therefore the most popular at the time. My new “Beetle” doll (as I spelled it) was the highlight of a diary entry and accompanied me to school the next day.
George, the often overlooked “quiet Beatle” was actually my favorite.
They are so cute!! 😎

It’s sad there are just two Beatles left… 😞

Ringo looks like a ‘Spitting Image’ character, God love him! He always seemed a cheerful soul. Poor old George! All that fame and fortune… gone… but some wonderful memories. 🙂 🙂

The likeness is quite remarkable. From what I’ve seen online, Ringo remains just as cheerful as ever. 🙂 Yes, wonderful memories were left behind – one of my favorite songs is one of George’s after The Beatles broke up: “My Sweet Lord.”

They are in fabulous condition, what an amazing piece of history to have. They must be worth a fortune both in memories and I suspect pennies. A top post today 😀

Thank you Becky! I was pleased at their condition too – just needed a damp paper towel for a long overdue cleanup. They may be worth some pennies, but more so in sentimental value 🙂

George was my favourite too.

George was my favorite, too. IMO the most talented of the four.

Aww … so cute and fun that you still have those items. I wasn’t a fan of the haircut either, but the Beatles, they could pull it off, couldn’t they? Is the record in mint condition? You may need to sell it to replenish your retirement fund?! Stay safe – stay well!

Thank you! No the record is far from mint condition. It has been well played (ie: well loved!). I took it (along with all my records) to summer camp jobs and then to college. Good idea in theory though 🙂

You’re welcome. I thought that may be the case – and I think the Beatles would be happy to hear it has been well listened to and well loved all these years!

I got to see George Harrison perform in Toronto, Ontario, in the 70’s. Great memory.

You are making me go INSANE! I have those too in an old trunk! I also went to see The Beatles in 1964 at The Cow Palace with my dad. It was THE most favorite memory of my life. My Dad wore a ‘Beatle wig” when Ed Sullivan was on *embarrassing but I did not look at him when they came on anyway*. Beatle boots too! Thanks for this wonderful memory.

I am so jealous! 🙂 Lucky you saw the Beatles play live…Wow! Your Dad in a Beatle wig too (embarrassing, yet so hysterical!). I loved Ed Sullivan – he had on such great groups. So are you going to dig out your Beatle dolls now ? 🙂
