Seeing Double

Lens-Artists Challenge #69: Seeing Double

 …let’s double our pleasure and focus on things that come in twos.

~~~
First: A glimpse back at summer…a pair of seagulls hanging out at the beach.
Next: A reminder of what is coming.
Two deck posts united in snow after a heavy wet March snowstorm. Looks like frosting to me.
AND…
Because today happens to be Halloween…I couldn’t resist an additional double from the family archives.
Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge – Looks Like a Face
This post inspired by Cee’s B&W Photo Challenge. The topic this week: Looks Like a Face
A grill with a sense of humor?
Back in the days of home ownership, we left our gas grill out on the side deck all year. Covered up. It was too big and cumbersome to lug down 4 stairs en route to storage in the garage.
So, why not use it year round?
Winter arrived. Every year…bringing snow and more snow. Burying the deck. Including the grill.
Just needed to shovel a path. Clear away the snow. Bundle up. Grab a flashlight. Move fast. Hope the gas hadn’t run out. Grilling hamburgers one New Year’s eve comes to mind. Much to the surprise of our visiting guests.
Only steps from the kitchen door, the grill was also my route to avoid using the broiler pan. And the resulting greasy, crusty mess. Including scrubbing out all those slats. Never a popular chore…especially for my teenage son who was often recruited for the task.
One snowy January day, this is what greeted me when I opened the side door…
…either mocking me…or offering a friendly greeting.
I could never decide which.
Tuesday Photo Challenge – Cold and Warm
Here is my entry for this week’s challenge hosted by Frank at Dutch goes the Photo
The theme this week is: Cold and Warm
Snowstorms happen.
When you own a home…with a driveway…the snow gets in the way.
It is cold…and wet…and heavy.
And – right after it falls to the ground – beautiful.
However, removing the snow can be quite a challenge, especially when over a foot deep.
Which, of course, must be measured and documented.
Staying warm during the snow removal process requires:
Many layers of clothing
Jacket and ski pants
Plus gloves
Plus hat…and hood.
If you are lucky, the sun shines…
Spreading the illusion of warmth.
As was the case… one day-after-the-storm in 2015.
One of the things I don’t miss about our former home is the aftermath of a snow storm…as pretty as it was.
Shoveling. Snowblowing. More shoveling.
Off the roof. The deck. The driveway.
However, snow storms did provide many of nature’s best photo opportunities.
Which lasted just a short time.
Tuesday Photo Challenge – Slippery
Here is my entry for this week’s challenge hosted by Dutch goes the Photo
The theme this week is “Slippery”
When I think slippery, I think “slip and fall” and…snowstorms.
When I was a kid, a snowstorm was exciting and often meant a day off from school. Making snow forts. Snowball fights. Snowmen.
Slipping and falling were part of the fun.
Not fun any more…
As a (former) homeowner, winter storms also meant:
First: Admiring the pretty snow.
Second: Taking photographs.
Third: Removing the snow from the front walk & driveway…with a shovel..or a snowblower…or both.
Fourth: Taking more photographs.
Below is a photo from February 2014 after a major snowfall.
I had just finished clearing the front walkway.
Still slippery though.
