Macro Monday: Busy Bee

Flowers and more flowers lined every street in the Washington, DC neighborhood where I spent 4 days last week – my first return visit in over a year. It was a lovely (in more ways than one) hug filled getaway complete with daily walks. My almost 5 year old grandson delighted in leading the way on his scooter…stopping frequently…Look Grandma Flowers! Always my trusty helper, he knew I was on the lookout…camera at the ready.

This particular bee was in a huge hurry flying from blossom to blossom, but I managed to capture this bright shot of its face in the plate so to speak. Wings shining in the sun.

Macro Monday: Opening Up

This could be considered Chapter 2 of Friday’s post. My congratulatory bunch of tulips is apparently enjoying its stay in my home. In fact, they are all distracting me in a very good way.

One by one, each tulip is opening up a bit and catching bright glimpses of sun from the window…despite the sun playing hide and seek behind the clouds as usual.

Macro Monday: Pair of Buds

A pair of buds…or perhaps really 2 pairs of buds…greeted me on a bright and breezy day last week. As I went out the back door of my building I noticed a bush…now sprouting buds everywhere on its spindly branches. I have no idea what name this bush goes by, but no matter. And for some reason I’m now reminded of that old Pac Man video game…however I digress.

I gratefully welcome yet another sign of Spring.

I went searching for Spring during a late day walk in the woods yesterday. Not much was going on bud-wise, so the evergreens took center stage. Often overlooked in the search for color (well, besides green), the sun made sure I spotted them this time.

I am happy to report that last week’s Macro Monday bud is in bloom! Miracles do happen. At least I like to think they do…with the help of plant food, pruning and many words of encouragement. So, yep, I’m talking to my plants. Sigh.

Totally worth it.

Macro Monday: Christmas in March?

I’m going to take it as a sign of hope…my decades old Christmas Cactus is showing signs of life after months of…just collecting dust. Lots of dust. Perhaps the fact that I recently gave it a brief shower in the kitchen sink helped. And a shot of fertilizer while I was at it.

My reward? This morning I noticed a BUD…in the sun! Even if it’s the only flower that shows up on my aging plant, it will be a welcome bit of color as we wait for Spring.

In my part of the world Spring arrives in 19 days. I don’t know about you, but I’m (very) impatiently waiting for the change of seasons…more so this year than in the past. I am excited for buds and blossoms…and color!

I searched the archives and found this shot from last April…which, in the meantime, will have to suffice.

Macro Monday: Letting go

One of nature’s most fascinating works of art (in my opinion) is the milkweed pod. I spotted one tucked in a tangle of vines a bit off the path during my walk several months ago. A pod had opened up and hung suspended…but I don’t think I would have noticed it without the sun’s highlighting help.

Strands of milkweed’s distinctive white floss had broken free…and were hanging down ready to release their seeds to the wind. What a sight!
