A Photo a Week Challenge: From the Back

Nancy Merrill Photography is hosting a photo challenge:

The theme this week is: From the Back.

IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE ONE OR MORE PHOTOS WHERE THE SUBJECT IS SHOWN FROM THE BACK.

When my children were growing up, one of our many Christmas traditions was making special cream cheese sugar cookies. Mixing the batter, rolling out the dough, cutting out the shapes and decorating with sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, red & green sugars. We made bells, candy canes, Christmas trees, stars, Santas and gingerbread men.

Our daughter is older than her brother by almost 6 years, so by the time he could participate she willingly offered her expert big sister help. Even as adults in their twenties, they wanted to continue making Christmas cookies. If possible, together.

I loved the sight of the two of them – for over 20 years – standing in the same place – in the same kitchen…using the same cookie cutters that I used as a child.  I have yearly photos documenting this activity – and my favorites are the ones I took from the back.

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Scene

Here is my entry for this week’s challenge hosted by “Dutch goes the Photo”

https://dutchgoesthephoto.net/2018/08/21/tuesday-photo-challenge-scene/

The theme this week is “Scene”

One of the consequences of emptying the nest and downsizing is a scene such as this:

My (32 year old) daughter: You can throw these out, Mom.

Me: Are you sure??

Daughter: I’ll never make anything with them now. I don’t make jewelry anymore.

Me: Are you sure?

Daughter: Yes!

Carefully designed and crafted rolls of polymer clay; originally they were small squares – each a separate color. Hours of work to combine and create. To slice up for earrings, pins and beads. From the age of 12 to 16.

Saved creations deemed irrelevant.

But preserved here nonetheless.

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Toys

Here is my entry for this week’s challenge hosted by “Dutch goes the Photo.”

https://dutchgoesthephoto.net/2018/08/14/tuesday-photo-challenge-toys/

The theme this week is “Toys”

I believe toys are a crucial piece of childhood. Practice for “real life” and a way to learn and figure out who you are. Toys are serious business!

Once there was a 4 year old girl who thoroughly enjoyed taking care of her toy buddies – Bears, Monkeys, Little dolls, Big dolls, Bunnies, Doggies. She and her daddy even made chairs for them – painted red with leftover house paint.

Her own child sized chairs, covered with a blanket, provided space for her larger buddies. At mealtime, it was crucial to get everyone ready and in position…for whatever feast she had prepared in a tiny tin roaster pan. Part of a cooking set handed down from her mom. Plastic food and all.

This photo captures one of those times.

This little girl grew up to be a passionate educator…and an excellent cook, baker and party planner. And a mom. Just to name a few of the many destinations her toys led her to.

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Field

Here is my entry for this week’s challenge hosted by “Dutch goes the Photo.”

https://dutchgoesthephoto.net/2018/07/31/tuesday-photo-challenge-field/

The theme this week is “Field”

As has happened in previous Tuesday photo challenges, one particular photo (35mm) instantly came to mind when I saw the theme. Even after 3 decades, I remember this image. A field of “wild” in the back section of our (fairly new) home’s half acre. We wanted to leave it “as is” for the wildflowers and grasses. It turned out to be the perfect place for a 2 1/2 year old to explore…and collect flowers and, as she called all things growing from the ground, “Natures.”

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Play

Here is my entry for this week’s challenge hosted by “Dutch goes the Photo.”

https://dutchgoesthephoto.net/2018/07/17/tuesday-photo-challenge-play/

The theme this week is “Play”

When I saw this week’s theme, one image instantly came to mind. A photograph I took several decades ago (35 mm)…but still remaining one of my favorites. This father and son inhabit the definition of play – the joy, the connection – and the give & take fun they are having playing together. Plunges into the lake, safely held tight and swooped up into the air. Over and over. At the age of almost 3 it doesn’t get much better than that.

spring has sprung

I love this time of year. It seems like anything is possible! Trees are coming back to life; tiny buds one day and full bloom the next (or so it seems). Hardy evergreens – the storm and snowplow survivors – are still standing. The green leaf beginnings of iris and other “mystery” plants poke out of the soggy ground. Every day they reveal themselves a little more.

So much snow this past winter. At times it would have been hard to imagine it gone.

Early yesterday evening as the light was getting low, I caught some of my favorite trees against a blue sky.

the beach

Here is where I want to be:

hamptonbeachnov2016.jpg

It has been raining for 2 days; puddles and small lakes forming everywhere I look out my windows. The grass disappearing underneath. The sun hiding behind stubborn clouds.

As soon as it clears and the sun comes out…and it warms up a bit, that’s where I’ll go. My favorite place to walk. It fills me up; its peace, its soothing sounds – the ultimate room with no doors, no walls – infinite space.  There is power in the ocean – an energy, a purpose. The tide goes in and goes out. Predictable. Not much in life is that predictable.

Often I pass by small children digging holes – trying frantically to avoid the waves that ultimately wash away their castles. Joggers of all shapes and sizes. Dogs run and jump despite the “no dogs allowed” signs. Couples pose for selfies; the ocean at their backs. A lone walker will stop and stare at the horizon. And nobody bothers her. I get it. It is hypnotizing and calming and energizing all at the same time.

Seagulls run up and down the sand. They stop. They look around, shake their heads as if bored. Same old, same old.
