Handy for a Hammock

One Word Sunday: Handy
BeckyB’s July Squares: Treesquare

Father & 3 year old daughter – 1985

What is a tree (or two) handy for? Besides climbing that is.

Trees can be perfect for hanging a hammock!

A place to settle on a hot August afternoon, when a little girl says…let’s read a book daddy!

The Clue in the Climbing Tree

“Tea for the Tillerman” album cover

There is a tree on this square (!) album cover…so it is joining the Treesquare challenge today. “Tea for the Tillerman” also happens to be one of my all-time favorite albums. I don’t know if I’ve ever really noticed the tree before, but now that I have, it just ups this album on my meter of favorites.

Those two kids climbing the tree? Well, one of them could have been me way back in the day between the ages of 4 and 11. When I had what I called a Climbing Tree in the front yard of our small home. I don’t recall what kind of tree it was; only that its branches were at just the right height for me to grab, gain a foothold…and up I’d go.

We also had a backyard, but it felt more like a cage. My father installed a split rail fence around the entire perimeter and then covered it with chicken wire – ostensibly so my sister, brother & I wouldn’t escape and flee wander off into traffic. Except there was very little (no) traffic, so maybe it was because of my little brother – so he could be sent out there to play unsupervised. He did tend to wander. I’d try to get away with climbing over the fence, as the gate was locked, but I was soon discovered.

The thing is…I loved the front yard. Much freer place to play. No fence. No boundaries but the street curb. Plus a tree to climb and hide in when it was leaved out. I spent hours balanced on branches…”spying” on unsuspecting passersby and imagining exciting stories about what adventures they might be up to! Perhaps too many “saving the day” Saturday morning cartoons; although more likely it probably coincided with my addiction to Nancy Drew books. Perhaps I was developing my own “The Clue in The Climbing Tree” or “The Secret in the Street.” Unfortunately I have yet to unearth any photographs of my tree in the boxes of old photos stacked high in my closets.

Decades later I happened to drive through that NJ suburb on a family trip and was curious to see the “old house” again. Sad to say the tree was gone. Gone! The house, unfortunately, remained frozen in time. Nothing had been done to maintain it. Peeling paint. Overgrown shrubbery. Junk piled up and down the crumbling driveway. The 1950s windows…dirty and tired. A sad sight.

The climbing tree was a rare happy place from that time in my life. A special perch and hide-out all in one. Perhaps it’s just as well I remember it that way.

Let’s not forget how this post started…Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf, released an incredible collection of brilliant songs on “Tea for the Tillerman” in 1970. As you can tell from the faded & worn album cover, it was well loved and spent little time on a shelf. We all have at least one album where we remember every word to every song…and know what song will come next as each one finishes. I know it’s clichΓ© – but in this case…I think these songs are timeless. Below is a link to one from this album (and it’s hard to choose just one, so if you can, check out the whole record):

Trees: here there and everywhere

BeckyB’s TreeSquare July Challenge

I love this pond, tucked next to a path through “my” woods. It is one of my favorite places and I’ve learned to step carefully around a mass of prickly bushes to get the perfect view. Without falling in. A photographer’s delight.

Depending on the time of day, I never know what magic the light will be playing on the water’s surface. On this day in May it was…trees everywhere!

Open Wide!

BeckyB’s July Square Challenge has begun! Well, it started yesterday, so I am a day late…
The theme this month is Trees.

I enjoy photographing trees in all their sizes, shapes and seasons. During a recent walk around a nearby neighborhood I looked up and noticed a tree branch…reaching out. Or something. A cloud also caught my eye. I do tend to see things that aren’t intentional. One might call that an overactive imagination. Or I am easily entertained. No matter.

Do you see what I see?

The tree. The cloud.
Open wide!

Macro Monday: Busy Bee

Flowers and more flowers lined every street in the Washington, DC neighborhood where I spent 4 days last week – my first return visit in over a year. It was a lovely (in more ways than one) hug filled getaway complete with daily walks. My almost 5 year old grandson delighted in leading the way on his scooter…stopping frequently…Look Grandma Flowers! Always my trusty helper, he knew I was on the lookout…camera at the ready.

This particular bee was in a huge hurry flying from blossom to blossom, but I managed to capture this bright shot of its face in the plate so to speak. Wings shining in the sun.

Macro Monday: Opening Up

This could be considered Chapter 2 of Friday’s post. My congratulatory bunch of tulips is apparently enjoying its stay in my home. In fact, they are all distracting me in a very good way.

One by one, each tulip is opening up a bit and catching bright glimpses of sun from the window…despite the sun playing hide and seek behind the clouds as usual.

Gotcha!

Spring Snow

Cee’s Flower of the Day

I woke up this morning to gloom and doom weather. By the time I was enjoying my coffee, snow had begun to fall in big fat clumps. What the heck? The simple answer: It is April 16th in New Hampshire where…besides live free or die…the state motto could very well be…wait a minute and the weather will change…. And so it does. My first thought: The poor daffodils!

These tulips arrived at my door yesterday afternoon – hand delivered by a friend and neighbor who lives downstairs in my condo building. I could “see” a big smile behind her mask.

What are these for? I asked.
To wish you good luck tonight and thank you for all you are doing on the board!

You see, my small world is now a study in contrasts. Last night the NH Art Association hosted a virtual “opening” of a special juried exhibition and two of my photographs were among those chosen to hang in the show. She and her husband were among my friends and family who were “attending.” She was hoping I would win a prize (I didn’t, but never expected to…the honor of inclusion was more than enough). I was so touched by her thoughtfulness. It was just the bright spot I needed.

The other side of my life? Being on the board of directors of my condo association since December. It’s my new practically full time “job.” The experience has not been as entirely positive or rewarding as peering through the lens of my camera and writing blog posts. In fact, sometimes it feels like I am back in middle school – and I was never a fan of middle school. That’s probably all I should say on the subject, but those of you who have ever been on a condo board likely understand. So, if you notice I have been absent from oneletterup, now you know why. I would much rather be here, but it is what it is. However, I am taking flight (almost literally) from home next week for a long weekend to visit my kids for the first time since our covidcation last August.

I’ll bring my camera, but try to leave the craziness behind.

Macro Monday: Pair of Buds

A pair of buds…or perhaps really 2 pairs of buds…greeted me on a bright and breezy day last week. As I went out the back door of my building I noticed a bush…now sprouting buds everywhere on its spindly branches. I have no idea what name this bush goes by, but no matter. And for some reason I’m now reminded of that old Pac Man video game…however I digress.

I gratefully welcome yet another sign of Spring.
