Macro Monday: Salty Pop

macro pop

My husband and I have popcorn making down to a science of deliciousness, using an electric popper that stirs the kernels as they pop in extra light olive oil. We have tried sesame oil as well. Either oil does the trick for flavor and eliminates the need for butter. As it sits steaming in its clear plastic bowl, I add the salt.

Popcorn has been my snack of choice for decades. Last week a fresh batch caught the setting sun streaming into the kitchen…resulting in an impromptu photo session.

We were preparing for an evening of entertainment…stay-at-home pandemic style. One of many such evenings since March. First on the list was catching up on movies we had meant to see before the Academy Awards broadcast in February. Movies such as Bombshell and Richard Jewell, which feature nominated actresses. Both films were excellent.

We also discovered an amazing documentary from 2015: The Wrecking Crew. And checked out a movie released right before movie theaters closed…The Way Back.

Who knows when we will be able to enter a movie theater again the “old way.” Without worrying about our health and safety. Local theaters are opening this week but with new rules and procedures. I’m not sure when I will feel comfortable trusting that those sitting nearby will follow those rules. In the meantime, we have our own homestyle theater which works just fine. Along with the best popcorn around.

      1. It is a brave new world. The theater near me has those electric reclining seats that are much easier on my back. You have to reserve them ahead of time. I am curious how they will work it with the distancing requirements.

      2. There is a little theater like that in a town near me. It’s a nonprofit and shows movies, has small concerts, book readings, etc. We also support it and go occasionally…despite the old style seating.

  1. You could be a food photographer! Makes me want to make some popcorn! I make my popcorn the same way, but use engevita yeast and tamari sauce!! The sauce eliminates the need for salt.

    1. Thanks for the compliment! I do like examining food up close. I think maybe we tend to take its uniqueness for granted. Interesting substitute idea for salt. There are so many options 🙂

  2. I would never have known t’was popcorn! Not quite flowers, maybe some sort of small animals just having emerged from their pods? But whatever, beautiful! Does an electric popper make a difference over microwave? Or don’t you indulge in microwave food?

    1. Thank you! One of the things I enjoy most about macro photography is seeing alternate “things” in the photo. I don’t make microwave popcorn because of the chemical smell and taste from the preservatives in it. Otherwise I use the microwave all the time! Also the popper and the oil combo tastes so good 🙂

  3. Monday’s is popcorn night for us. We get the microwave kind but it is the Newman’s Simple Light. We had extra virgin olive oil and nutritional yeast instead of salt. Tastes just like salt but better for you. Yummy! 😊 love the photo!

    1. Thanks! Popcorn is such a great snack – so many ways to enjoy it. I’ve heard others mention the nutritional yeast. I actually use “lite salt” which has less sodium and I don’t mind the taste difference. 🙂
