Lens-Artists Challenge #100: The Long and Winding Road

My long and winding road entries (one begins as a path) for this week’s challenge are close to home…seeing as that’s where I’ve been for 3 months. The photos, however, are from last fall. One could argue they aren’t very long and winding, but the roads themselves eventually are just that.

The first photo is where I turn right into my street. The trees light up with color in the fall and the road does eventually wind – snake like – past 7 almost identical condo buildings to where I live.

The second photo is the “road” more traveled and is located in back of my building. At first a well worn path, it eventually joins a dirt road used by runners, dog walkers, dirt bike riders…and sometimes snowmobilers in the winter. Every so often the utility company powers a massive truck past the “no trespassing” sign when it needs to do its thing. Often leaving deep muddy tire tracks in its wake. After fiddling with the massive power boxes or clear cutting trees.

But I like this road for its discovery potential. And the deer I sometimes meet for brief staring contests. Fearless chipmunks and squirrels pay me no mind. The woodchuck, however, always makes a quick getaway at my approach. It’s their home after all. I guess this road was made for them and me. 🙂

As far as I’m concerned…this road is mostly made for walking. And that’s just what I do.

Except to pause when it’s time for play…you never know how many acorns you’ll find along the way.

  4. Marvelous post, Andrea! It looks like such a lovely “Perfect” area to live. You have me thinking about woodchucks now…how do they differ from anything in the squirrel–or totally unrelated–creatures?

    1. Thanks Leslie! It is a lovely spot to escape to despite the highway noise through the trees. Woodchucks are much bigger than squirrels and chomp up gardens and other plant life. That’s all I know 🙂

      1. Hahaha, probably all I need to know about woodchucks–thanks, Andrea! 🙂 Do the trees muffle the highway noise, I hope? I’m barely a block from a state highway–and there’s no muffling the noise. Between that and the planes that sound like they’re going to land (or crash) on my roof…some days it stretches my tolerance rope thin 🙂

      2. Unfortunately the trees don’t muffle much. I can see the traffic through the trees. Blizzards and the beginning of the lockdown brought some relief from the noise. No planes though!

      5. When it snows here (Seattle area), which isn’t often and usually doesn’t last, it seems to shut everything down temporarily–and oh, the Quiet is heavenly!! 🙂

      7. You and me both, Andrea!! That’s why I stay up all night, sleep in the day–at night I can hear myself think 🙂 So I’l be going to bed shortly 🙂

    1. Thank you. Yes, you guessed it – that’s my little 3 year old sweetie pie during his last visit this past November. That path is my go-to get away for walking, photos and to clear my head. I’m so grateful it’s there. 🙂

      1. He’s a sweetie that’s for sure! I hope you’re virtually getting to visit with him? I bet he’s growing like crazy. I loved the 3rd year of my kiddo’s lives – their so darn cute at that age.
        I’d be grateful to be on that path every day too!

      2. Yes we do FaceTime at least once a week. We missed actually being with him for his 4th birthday last week though. He did offer to fly a plane to our house to pick us up 😁! If only.
